July 10, 2017 | The “Opportunity” Edition
Good Monday morning,
I was recently taking an UBER; you can have a variety of experiences with UBER drivers. The particular conversation, the driver, talked about technology, globalization, woman’s rights, AI and security. He was well versed in all of these areas, the thing that struck me was his tone.
To be frank, he was quite contrary.
I agreed that we live in unique and challenging times and that is not always easy. The media is consistently reminding us on a minute by minute basis of the dangers and disrupters in our current social and economic environment.
I have been enjoying the Hong Kong Bank global advertisement campaigns as you board planes. As I was leaving for our Vancouver office, this was on the gateway:
“Tomorrow is full of opportunity.”
Tomorrow; “a future period or time.”
Full; “containing or holding as much or as many as possible; having no space.”
Opportunity; “A set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.”
I was reminded of how many opportunities there were in this country around my dinner table. My parents never discussed the challenges with technology, globalization, or social unrest, but rather all of the opportunities that could be pursued or achieved.
I found the conversation I had with my UBER driver as paradoxical. All of the social and economic trends were enabling him to create an opportunity that would have never existed in the past. The challenge was that, in his mind, the world was a place with more danger and less opportunity.
Do you see what I see?
His tomorrow was darker than his today.
I shared my belief that since the beginning of time, there have been challenges. We are better served as individuals and as a society, to understand these challenges and find ways to make the world a better place.
What do you believe about tomorrow?
Along the road with you,
