Good Monday morning,
Just in case you’re trying to reach me towards the end of March, I won’t be around.
You may be asking, “Where are you going?” (Or maybe you’re not that interested.)
I’ll be in Rome.
You may be asking, “Why?”
Well, I have this incredible opportunity to be the person who sends the white smoke up the chimney, signalling the election of the next Pontiff.
Now you’re definitely asking, “How on earth did that happen?”
To be frank, I won’t be in Rome in March, and I’m certainly not qualified to send white smoke up a chimney. If you’ve never seen me try to start a fire, let’s just say that my Scout master would be truly embarrassed.
March will be an hotelier’s dream month as millions of people make their way to Rome for the election of a new Pope. Pope Benedict XVI will be resigning on Feb 28 due to advanced age and poor health. This is the first time in almost 600 years that a Pope has voluntarily resigned, talk about job security!
As Kenny Rogers tells us, “You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em“
When is the right time to walk away? Should you resign? Is it harder to find a job when you are unemployed? Like many professionals, Pope Benedict had to address most of these questions, but I don’t think he’s worrying about networking for his next gig. I’m also certain that he is doing the right thing, both for himself and for his organization.
How do you know when to resign?
- Trust your gut. Look at all the obvious factors influencing your decision, but pay most attention to what your gut says about leaving.
- Talk to your advisors. Make sure you seek outside counsel to get an unbiased perspective on your situation and options.
- Take courage, act decisively, and don’t accept a counteroffer. It is important to craft your message, act with respect, and not waver on your original decision.
The great news is that most people who decide to leave under their own steam (or smoke) land in better situations; they move forward by taking control of their careers.
