Monday mornings I head over to my local Starbucks and take myself out for coffee.
Yes, you heard that correctly, I take myself out for coffee.
The purpose of that time is to process how the previous week went and to refocus focus for the week ahead.
Over time, I’ve gotten to know the people who work there. This morning as I was ordering my coffee one of the baristas Steve asked me what I did for a living. I went on to explain the work we do. He asked me how I ended up doing what I do. We had a really great conversation and it was nice to “connect” as a person.
As I was picking up my vente caramel macchiato with coconut milk, Steve again asked me another question.
To be frank, I didn’t totally have my “work” brain on yet. However, as I started to move into “coach” mode, these three things came to me:
- Follow your curiosity
- Be disciplined in your actions
- Take courageous steps toward what you truly want
There’s also a bonus idea that I shared.
You will run into obstacles in your career and life. This is where you will need to embrace resilience and bounce back and take corrective actions.
We live in a drive-thru society and as a result we often expect to sit in the comfort of our situation and “order” what we need. We then expect someone will hand deliver it to us.
The reality is that every day we need to show up and practice these four principals.
The reason I am sitting here writing this with a coffee in my hand is because of a gentleman by the name of Howard Schultz. He discovered and practiced these very same principals.
Like making a specialized coffee, you need to follow the formula. Steve doesn’t need to figure out how to create a specialized coffee, Howard and his leadership team have already created an incredibly successful framework that Steve can add to.
Along the road with you,
