How to turn your passion into a livelihood

Let’s say you love to mountain bike, the smell of rubber against the rocks, the aroma of fresh fern, riding with a bunch of friends and then a great dinner with wine at the end of the day at your log home 20 minutes from Blue Mountain. In the morning you get up, go to yoga then back to your home office to work on your mountain biking business for the rest of the day. How do you turn your passion into a sustainable lifestyle? Read more and you can win a prize worth over $500 from Flygurlz.

I want to introduce you to Michelle Ward. She is the founder of Flygurlz. Her business is turning 10 this year and yes, this is her life. As I have mentioned, we are launching our Conversation Podcasts in which I have interviewed a number of people about their career journey. All of them will be inspiring stories, interesting people and lessons to be learned.

This weeks conversation is with Michelle. Flygurlz is Canada’ s largest mountain bike community for women. It was a dream that started 10 years ago when Michelle was looking to develop her own skills on the bike. She noticed that there really wasn’t any bike community really focused on women. She did some market research and realized she wasn’t the only woman looking for this. With passion, focus and discipline she took the plunge and launched her company using the facilities of Blue Mountain and the support of a number of companies including Devinci, Powerbar and Louis Garneau. Flygurlz is focused on helping women to grow as people. "The bike, outdoor environment and the community of other women are the catalysts real changes in their lives", said Michelle. Flygurlz puts on clinics and weekend learn to ride camps. At these camps, women not only learn to mountain bike, but grow as people and have a lot of fun, since most of these woman are leading busy lives with families and professional careers.

For me, the bike is the metaphor of the tool for change. Michelle’s passions sparked a flame of inspiration in literally thousands of woman seeking change in their lives over the past 10 years, while at the same time providing a really great professional and life balance for Michelle. I think she has found the right job! Her own definition of career success is "having fun and touching people while staying centered and balanced!"

A few things – I will be speaking at her camp May 26th and 27th on " Shifting career gears". You may learn how to ride, have fun and think through some of your major career decisions that you are facing – a well balanced weekend!

Enter our draw. Send me an email at alan@careerjoy.com with a note about what has inspired you lately and we will do a draw for over $500 worth of Flygurlz stuff including one Flygurlz Camp Ticket (day of your choice) and a team kit including a Louis Garneau Team jersey, shorts, socks, t-shirt, hat and PowerBar sampler.
