[FLR] The Up, Down and Out of Leadership: Lessons from the World of the Municipal CAO

Happy Friday!

As we wrap up National Public Service Week this week, I am reminded that the leadership skills we’ve celebrated aren’t limited to just the public sector. Context is unique to each sector and industry but ultimately a good leader is a good leader regardless of where they work.

One interesting leadership skill that applies to all professionals, regardless of their level and official leadership status, is the ability to lead “up”…that is to lead “organizational superiors to enable them to decide or direct”.

When leaders, both within the government and the private sector, lead in multiple directions they are able to build trust and have a more accurate assessment of where they are needed.

[Government] services are only as good as the people who deliver them, and the quality of the people at the working level is determined by the quality of the leadership they receive.
