Good Monday morning,
Last weekend, Christoph Waltz took home another Oscar for his role as Dr. King Shultz in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. It was his second award as best supporting actor under Quentin’s direction.
About 35 years ago, Christoph had an extraordinary conversation with Agnes de Mille, the original choreographer of several Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway productions.
When they first met, she confided, “I can tell you are an actor.” Christoph felt a deep sense of pride, thinking that she saw his true potential.
Then she explained, “It doesn’t matter how great an actor you are, what matters is who you know and who you don’t know.”
Yes, she was talking about his network.
Maybe you think that’s not fair, or you don’t know many people; perhaps you’re shy, or new to your area.
Here are the facts:
It is who you know, who you need to know, and what you know.
In an interview with Charlie Rose, Christoph tells us that 4 years ago he didn’t know Quentin Tarantino. He was a great actor, and he knew his craft well. Still, getting to know Quentin took Christoph’s career to another level. “He gave me back my vocation.”
Ask yourself: Who do you need to know to take your career to that next level? What can you do to get to know them?
Then ask yourself who you do know. How can you build on the network you already have?
