I knew it was “that” time of year when I saw this. The festive season is once again upon us – a time of year when people for the most part are…well…nicer!
It’s also the time of year when we all have a lot on our plate, madly trying to finish up a multitude of projects before the end of December.
Then, there are also the many rituals that we all have at this time of year. Some of mine include:
The ritual of standing in line at the Apple store.
The ritual of finding parking at the mall.
The ritual of trying to remember everyone on my gift list.
The ritual of the Charlie Brown Christmas track on my iPhone.
The ritual of Christmas lights.
The ritual of eggnog (which personally, I could pass on…)
The ritual of festive parties.
For some reading this, it may be the time of year where the happy rituals are lost in the pressure of getting everything done. Or, you may be in a time of transition
and questionsabout the future
are putting a damper on your festive cheer. Recently, I was speaking with aclient
who was sharing a bit of this frustration about how December, now that it was here, was impacting his job search. He sensed that his transition was now on hold until the New Year. Yet I reminded him, that this is a terrific time of year to get out to the variety of festive events offered in his personal and professional life. He could use these events as a lower-key time to “bump” into people and set up times to meet for more formal conversations in January.
So, make the most of this holiday season’s events, but…
Don’t over do the eggnog 🙂
Don’t pitch your need for a new job.
Don’t allow yourself to get “stuck” with the same person the entire time.
Don’t take yourself too seriously.
Do bring some business cards.
Do be strategic about who you sit beside and with whom you connect.
Do bring mints.
Do have fun!
“To many people, holidays are not voyages of discovery, but a ritual of reassurance.”
To me, this quote by Philip Andrew Adams
really sums up what we all want and need from the holiday season.
Wherever you are at in your life, may you discover, in new or very familiar ways, the ritual of reassurance.
