Good Monday morning,
I must admit, I do like dunking cookies, especially an original Dad’s oatmeal.
The key to perfect dunking is the right combination of temperature and time. Too much of either, and you get oatmeal tea soup. With the right amount of both, a cookie just melts in your mouth.
Leadership and cookie dunking share a lot in common.
The Superbowl played out a bit differently this year. I watched with a group of friends, as usual. But it was an unusual night. First there was the blackout, then the advertisement that got the biggest buzz wasn’t even seen on TV.
What’s so amazing about this story?
The tweet that lit up the stadium and the world “was designed, captioned and approved within minutes” shared Sarah Hofstetter, president of 360i. “When the blackout happened, the team looked at it as an opportunity. When all of the stakeholders come together so quickly, you’ve got magic.”
Some say it was a cheap shot, but I was impressed.
What does this mean for you and me as leaders?
Timing matters more than ever. There is opportunity in everything. It may well be in a moment of darkness, a crisis in your organization, sector, or a competition.
“The team at Oreo are relevant, visible and constant, and they are a brave brand.”
Great leaders have these qualities. Think of leadership like a cookie, one side is relevant, the other side is constant, and the filling in the middle is visibility. Dunk that in a cup full of brave.
