Good Monday morning,
Some people seem to be in the right place at the right time, while others struggle to catch a break.
Not long ago, I was in Calgary speaking at an event and meeting with our team. I decided to take a quick drive out to Bragg Creek to grab breakfast and on my return, I noticed this on the side of the highway.
I was curious.
I kept driving a short distance, but my curiosity got the better of me. I did a U-turn, parked my car, and introduced myself to Paul, a professional photographer based in Calgary. He was setting up to capture a picture of the space station crossing the sun.
I asked him why he was doing this. I assumed it was for a client; No, he replied, it was a hobby. Paul has been a professional photographer for over 17 years, and his “job” is also his hobby. That’s passion at work!
Does timing matter in Paul’s life? It certainly does. He had invested several hours setting up just to catch this shot, not to mention the 17 years of experience, commitment, and thousands of dollars of equipment. How long did he have to get it?
One second. Period.
Everything had to align just right to get this picture. Most opportunities in life are like that; being in the right place at the right time. Job hunting proves this, time and time again.
What is the most effective way to improve your timing?
As a Scout, this was the most essential and best lesson I learned. If you’re prepared and intentional, you will be ready to “catch” opportunity when it passes through your orbit.
Did Paul get the shot? Not that morning. The space station went below the sun, but above the horizon. Unshaken, he told me, “I’ll get it someday, and heck, I met you today, Alan. It’s all good.”
Preparation can create good timing in your life; it ensures that eventually, like Paul, you’ll be ready when it’s time to make the catch.
Get ready. Put yourself in orbit. You’ll get it!
