Happy Valentine’s Day. I understand, you might feel lonely today. Think about what you can do to celebrate the family and friends in your life. Today celebrates relationships of all kinds, it is also a great time to be in the chocolate & flowers business. Work is a key place for all of us to establish and build community, many of my lifelong friends have come from previous employment. This week’s podcast, is with distinguished University of Chicago Professor, John Cacioppo author of Loneliness: Human nature and our need for social connection. Your work stress, professional performance, probability of being promoted and overall quality of life, are all directly related to the quality & depth of your relationships.
John’s pioneering research on human nature and the need for social connection, shows we have never been more connected with tools such as, Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn yet, more alone. Connections, followers and friends, don’t necessarily mean relationships. According to Cameron Marlow, Facebook’s “in-house sociologist” woman on average regularly communicate with 16 friends and men, 10 friends. We all need community and it’s about quality, not quantity.
Many professionals and especially leaders, think the best way is to do things on their own. A Randstad Work Watch shared stronger relationships increased teamwork by 69% and led to a 50% increase in knowledge sharing and open communication. John’s work showed with overwhelming evidence, that the most effective way to achieve a more fulfilling personal and professional life is by being in healthy relationships.
As the African proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Community always leads to opportunity and that leads to more community, it’s the gift that keeps on giving!
