Is there a secret to finding work-life balance?

Good Monday Morning,

Did you do a lot of "home-work" this weekend? How many work related emails and calls did you deal with? The number one issue in most work related employee surveys is work-life balance. This expression was first used in the mid 1980's to describe the balance between an individual's work and personal life. According to our last weeks poll; the number one issue you responded  to in dealing with work-life balance was; balance of work (39%) followed by a tie between expectations of boss and technology (17%), financial commitments (14%) and global projects (10%).

According to research by The Center for Work-Life Policy, sixty - four percent feel that their work stress is "self-inflicted" Eighty-one percent of respondents say that work-life balance is affecting their health. You can listen to the podcast from our recent webinar on Work-Life balance (practical advice for the real world) with Launi Skinner former President of 1800GOTJUNK and Starbucks North America and Laura Bickle Managing Editor of Today's Parents Magazine. Work-Life Balance

I have four part-time jobs that I do from home, and I still have an enjoyable life. From Friday at 11 pm till Sunday at 8 pm the only thing I do on my computer is play video games!

My work schedule is well-defined, and, because my home office is steps from the washer and dryer, I can multi-task twioe a week doing laundry while I work. I write articles for Internet clients, and compose tests and homework projects for my students. When I need a break, I turn my office chair around and presto! I'm in the TV room.

Two of my other jobs are outside my home, and come up infrequently. They are completely different in nature from the computer-based work. While they don't pay much I provide useful help to other self-employed people with them.

Perfectly apropos of this topic, if you have not yet seen the movie "Up in the Air", with George Clooney, go see it. I predict that self-employment will grow astronomically in the wake of this film.

Separation of personal and professional

Tanya, I agree ..we often talk about the need for separation of church & state. What about he separation of work and home...thanks for your thoughts

along the road with you!

Alan
