There is a lot of discussion regarding the the role of management: is it even necessary anymore? At one point having managers was the expectation, but now we live in an age where the title is earned and needs to be supported. Google learned this; they didn’t just tell an engineer, “Here is your new manager, follow her!” Leadership is earned. People will follow if they respect you.
