What is the current state of the job market? Where are the quality jobs? What defines a good career these days? This week is a special po dcast recorded from CBC's radio show The Current. Host Anna Maria Tremonti interviewed Laurell Ritchie National Representative from the Canadian Auto Workers and myself on the state of employment in the Canadian marketplace, at this time.
The good news is that we are seeing a measure of confidence returning to the employment market. Benjamin Tal author of the most recent Canadian Employment Quality Index shared that employment showed a modest gain, however employment quality actually dropped 3.8 per cent. Self-employment has surged by three per cent over the past six months vs. a 0.5 per cent decline in paid employment. I am hearing from a number of HR managers and recruiters that they are now starting to hire again, the lead in the start of a recovery is the hiring of more professionals on contract (hence why the quality index has dropped). Once the market has fully stabilized you will see more full-time hiring. On a very positive note, Eric Schmidt CEO of Google shared at a speech of the Association of National Advertisers last week "We know we have begun the recovery because searches for terms like "restaurants" and "dancing" are increasing. I think we should be optimistic"

Employment and The Economy
Hi Alan,
Excellent points made during the interview on the Current. It is interesting the texture of the labour market is changing. I have heard on the news (CBC, CTV) reports of the economy losing full time work (manufacturing and other sectors) and being replaced by part time, contract and self employment. The quality of work does come to question as we remain in recession and the US reached a 26 year high in the unemployment statistics.
Employment index seems to refer to employer recruitment activity. Would personal employment index refer to our own development and promotion of our brand to employers or marketing our own business?
