Career Lessons from Sandra Bullock

I enjoyed watching the Oscars last night. It is amazing to watch a room full of people who have invested their entire lives becoming great at something they love. What does it take to have breakthrough success? Is it all talent? Is it who you know? This week’s podcast is with N.Y. Times best-selling book The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle. He spent 2 years researching what it takes to stand apart in any profession.

Last night, Sandra Bullock won her first Oscar for her role in The Blindside. In her acceptance speech she shared, “I am thankful for my Mom, she reminded be to be an artist you need to practice every day.” When I think of winning an Oscar, I would say to myself, “What amazing talent they have.” Yes there are many talented people, but the research from Daniel’s book shows you need a balance of discipline, smart training and a supportive professional team around you.

When I think of practice, lots of ideas come to mind. We have all been in situations where we are practicing but not really moving forward in the skill we are trying to develop. I have been snowboarding for a number of years; recently, I decided to get some coaching to help me become better. My coach provided some insight in the way that I am practicing this sport I enjoy. As a result, my practice is really making a difference and I am feeling more control when on the hill, and enjoying it more. There is practicing, then there is what Daniel calls “deep practice.” Daniel’s book suggests 3 keys to creating a “Deep practice” routine:

  1. Chunk It Up – This principle requires you to break down what you are learning into small pieces. You learn one element at a time then combine them to master the new skill.
  2. Repeat It – This principle requires you to work on this new skill 100’s of times so that it is very natural for you.
  3. Learn to Feel It – Once you move beyond having to think about what you are doing, you can then move from your mind to your intuition. This is where the great breakthroughs occur.

Yes talent is born, but greatness is all about the smart work involved with using the talent you have been given.
