Do you ever leave an interview wishing you had done a better job communicating your strengths? How important are presentation skills in advancing your career and building your personal brand? What makes for an engaging presentation? This weeks podcast is from The Canadian Career Development Webinar Series with Carmine Gallo author of The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs-How to be Insanely Great in Front of Any Audience. This coming week, millions of people will tune in to hear Steve Jobs launch a set of new products- why? Partly because we know that Apple seems to continually create breakthrough products, but mainly because Steve Jobs is an insanely great presenter.  Carmine Gallo a columnist with Businessweek.com shares his research and ideas on what Steve Job's secrets are.

According to Mark, there are 3 keys that Steve Job's uses every  time that he presents that creates a "wow" when he takes the stage.

Act 1-Create the Story-A strong story will give you the confidence and ability to win over your audience.

Act 2-Deliver the experience-Turn your presentations into visually appealing and "must-have" experiences.

Act 3-Refine and Rehearse-Steve spends numerous hours preparing and rehearsing for his presentations.

You don't have to be a billionaire or CEO to use these simple principles. Steve has been working on his skills for over 30 years, there really are no secrets, start on yours today. As the world's foremost management consultant Peter Drucker once commented "When you move one step up from the bottom, your effectiveness depends on your ability to reach others through the spoken and written word"

Presentation Skills

Alan:

It is amazing how a little presentation skills training, spread over about four weeks, that includes peer evaluation done in a supportive way, can polish even the most hesitant presenter. Over the past 6 years, I've seen miracles as I have worked with computer programing and networking students at the college level, as well as professionals who want to develop this skill set. Even seasoned seminar leaders have discovered body language distractions or speech patterns that prevented their words from being heard. Without knowledge of these, it is impossible to move to the next level.

Typically, the largest barrier that keeps people back is their basic fear speaking in front of others; however, once a person embraces the goal to improve their skills, they se results quickly, inspiring them to take on presentations they formally would have avoided like the plague. Organizing the stories and content they'll use, practicing, and learning how to keep the audience with you naturally follows this and are vital to delivering a professional presentation. Thank you for focusing our attention on presentation skills. Although many may not want to match Steve Job's vibrant style, they can discover their own unique way of presenting and move their careers forward.

Warm regards,

Catherine
